Which two professions a new character will take up as his primary means of earning game currency is one of the first things he must decide in World of Warcraft. All the professions are Skinning, Leatherworking, Enchanting, Alchemy, Tailoring, Jewel-crafting, Inscription, Mining, Herbalism and Blacksmithing. Each profession comes with its benefits and drawbacks but some are better than others.
Blacksmithing is a middle-of-the-road profession. It will allow your mail and plate wearing characters to make really cool gear so that you can avoid outrageous prices at the AH. Overall, it is a skill that appears to have a large net again but also one in which it is easy to lose game gold in that the materials are often more costly or more difficult and time-consuming to farm than the item that you will make and sell.
This means that you can make a mint off of your Blacksmithing skill. It is to say that doing so is not as easy as gathering skill like Skinning, Herbalism or Mining. As a Blacksmith, your best money will be made on the lamest gear you are trained to make. The epic stuff yields big money, but only if you grab the materials accidentally during quests and are smart enough to bank them rather than sell them.
As a Blacksmith, you will want to optimize your success at gathering by making absolutely certain that you take Mining as your main profession and that you level it as fast as you can. You smelt your ore and bank it until you have a full bank ready to empty as you level Blacksmithing.
Your best-selling gear will be that gear that everyone needs, no matter the level, in spite of the lure of epic and blue gear. Your bread and butter are weight stones and sharpening stones. Level your blacksmithing so that you are able to provide these items for everyone in the game regardless of level. Don't concern yourself with the fact that your recipe is gray because of your level. Make the ones that sell and make a lot of them. These two items are in high demand because they are used to increase the power of weaponry, more than any other thing made by Blacksmiths. And what's more, the stones only last an hour once equipped, so you can sell a ton of them to the same character. Sell them in lots of 10 and always make sure to keep a few around for your own use.
For example, cars in the real world cost a lot and car manufactures make a decent profit. Auto parts makers make a mint too. You should keep in mind that your purpose is to make the part, not the car if you pick up Blacksmithing as one of your two professions in World of Warcraft. Just let some other unsuspecting sucker make the car, you make your fortune off of the parts. The smart Blacksmith is the humble Blacksmith who understands the value of keeping it simple. Probably your simplistic choice of Blacksmithing may lead you to the complexity of choices faced by those whose coffers overflow with wow gold.
